{"id":113593,"date":"2014-11-06T12:59:16","date_gmt":"2014-11-06T10:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=113593"},"modified":"2014-11-06T13:00:54","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T11:00:54","slug":"100-failure-rate-for-sa-law-enforcement-internet-data-requests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/113593-100-failure-rate-for-sa-law-enforcement-internet-data-requests.html","title":{"rendered":"100% failure rate for SA law enforcement Internet data requests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s law enforcement agencies had a 0% success rate when it came to data requests sent to Facebook, Google, and Microsoft from January to June 2014.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Facebook SA government requests\" href=\"https:\/\/govtrequests.facebook.com\/country\/South%20Africa\/2014-H1\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Facebook recently released its government data requests report<\/strong><\/a> for the first half of 2014, which showed that governments around the world made 34,946 requests for data.<\/p>\n<p>This followed <a title=\"Google transparency report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/transparencyreport\/userdatarequests\/countries\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Google&#8217;s Transparency Report<\/strong><\/a> a few weeks ago which showed a 15% increase in requests compared to the second half of last year, and a 150% jump since we first began publishing this data in 2009.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">South African data requests<\/h3>\n<p>Three of the transparency reports \u2013 from Google, Facebook, and <a title=\"Microsoft transparency report\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/about\/corporatecitizenship\/en-us\/reporting\/transparency\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Microsoft<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 included data relating to South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>According to these reports the South African government and local law enforcement agencies filed 11 requests for data &#8211;
