{"id":114899,"date":"2014-12-01T07:17:06","date_gmt":"2014-12-01T05:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=114899"},"modified":"2014-12-01T07:20:50","modified_gmt":"2014-12-01T05:20:50","slug":"africas-first-electronic-voting-praised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/114899-africas-first-electronic-voting-praised.html","title":{"rendered":"Africa&#8217;s first electronic voting praised"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A parliamentary observer mission lauded Namibia on Sunday for introducing electronic voting on the African continent, while the country&#8217;s voters await the election results.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Namibia must be congratulated, notwithstanding some glitches, for having\u00a0pioneered the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs),&#8221; chairman of\u00a0the SADC Parliamentary Forum (SADC-PF) observer mission Jacob Mudenda said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Namibia&#8217;s lead can be emulated by other countries in Africa and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The SADC-PF observer mission declares Namibia&#8217;s elections as having\u00a0been free, fair, credible, transparent, peaceful and democratic,&#8221;\u00a0Mudenda told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Like the African Union and Southern African Development Community (SADC) observer mission leaders, Mudenda noted that new technology, like the EVM&#8217;s and voter verification scanners, delayed voting as election staff were not very familiar with them.<\/p>\n<p>Mudenda, who is the Speaker of Zimbabwe&#8217;s National Assembly, said\u00a0his observer mission recommended that legislative provisions be made on the timeframe for the electoral commission to officially publish election results.
