{"id":115483,"date":"2014-12-23T22:34:11","date_gmt":"2014-12-23T20:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=115483"},"modified":"2014-12-23T22:35:27","modified_gmt":"2014-12-23T20:35:27","slug":"biggest-broadband-developments-in-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/115483-biggest-broadband-developments-in-2014.html","title":{"rendered":"Biggest broadband developments in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2014 saw many significant developments in the South African broadband market, including the launch of fibre-to-the-home services and the rollout of LTE Advanced.<\/p>\n<p>ADSL prices also continued to decline, with many high-usage accounts offering unshaped data at less than R2 per GB.<\/p>\n<p>There were also some price moves in the mobile data market, but nothing close to what was seen in the fixed broadband market.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the highlights\u00a0in the South African broadband market from 2014.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"Telkom LTE Advanced\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/114249-telkom-150mbps-lte-a-goes-live.html\">Telkom launches 150Mbps LTE Advanced<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>In November 2014 Telkom launched its 150Mbps LTE Advanced service in Parkview and Parkhurst. The cost of the service is R1,399 for a 100GB monthly package.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"Parkhurst FTTH\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/113033-parkhurst-vumatel-1gbps-fibre-goes-live.html\">Fibre-to-the-home launched in Parkhurst<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The first homes in Parkhurst received access to a Gigabit per second (Gbps) Vumatel fibre connection in October 2014. Users are able to choose between line speeds of 4Mbps, 50Mbps, 100Mbps, and 1Gbps, and can use any ISP which supports the Vumatel network.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"Telkom fibre to the home launch\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/114943-telkom-fibre-to-the-home-prices-unveiled.html\">Telkom 100Mbps fibre-to-the-home launched<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>On 1 December 2014 Telkom announced the availability of its 20Mbps, 40Mbps, and 100Mbps fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services in selected areas in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"Neotel wireless\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/113285-neotel-launches-new-broadband-service-cuts-prices.html\">Neotel wireless broadband price cuts<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>In November 2014 Neotel launched its new NeoBroadband Wireless products, offering speeds of between 1Mbps and 10Mbps. The service offers unshaped, uncapped bandwidth at speeds ranging from 1Mbps to 10Mbps at affordable rates.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"Fibre to the home\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/114841-best-fibre-to-the-home-prices-in-south-africa.html\">ISPs launch fibre-to-the-home packages<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Numerous Internet Service Providers (ISPs) started offering fibre-to-the-home packages over the last few months. These ISPs included MWEB, Web Africa, Cybersmart, and Vox Telecom.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"MTN FTTH\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/101120-100mbps-mtn-fibre-to-the-home-commercial-launch-announced.html\">MTN fibre-to-the-home launched<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>In June 2014 MTN connected its first customers to its 100Mbps fibre-to-the-home offering in Monaghan Farm in Gauteng. MTN later released its <a title=\"MTN fibre prices\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/111698-new-aggressive-mtn-fibre-broadband-prices-unveiled.html\"><strong>new fibre-to-the-home broadband prices<\/strong><\/a>, offering speeds of between 20Mbps and 100Mbps with tariffs ranging between R794 per month and R1,389 per month.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"Cybersmart Lightspeed++\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/114935-150mbps-uncapped-fibre-unlimited-free-calls.html\">Cybersmart Lightspeed++ service<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>In December 2014 Cybersmart unveiled its new Lightspeed++ service aimed at the business market, offering 150Mbps uncapped fibre-to-the-business and unlimited calls for R15,999 (Ex VAT) per month.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"MWEB free Wi-Fi\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/94947-free-wifi-through-mweb-on-national-international-network.html\">MWEB free Wi-Fi deal<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>In January 2014 MWEB announced a partnership with Fon, the world\u2019s largest Wi-Fi network, which will provide participating MWEB customers with free access to this network globally.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"VDSL price cuts by Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/108476-telkom-20mbps-40mbps-vdsl-wholesale-price-cuts.html\">Telkom VDSL price cuts<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>In August 2014 Telkom reduced the price of its 20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL wholesale products. What followed was the\u00a0<strong><a title=\"VDSL price cuts\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/110682-telkom-cuts-20mbps-40mbps-vdsl-prices.html\">reduction of VDSL retail prices<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0by several\u00a0ISPs.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"ADSL data price cuts\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/96125-cheapest-capped-adsl-prices-ever.html\">ADSL data prices plummet<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Many Internet Service Providers cut the price of ADSL data in 2014, with prices falling to as low as R1.50 per GB.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a title=\"Telkom IPC price cuts\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/95431-telkom-adsl-ipc-price-cut.html\">Telkom ADSL IPC price cut<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>In January 2014 Telkom Wholesale announced an effective 15% price reduction on its IP Connect (IPC) product, which took\u00a0effect from 1 February.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year saw many important developments in the South African broadband market.
