{"id":116221,"date":"2015-01-05T11:57:36","date_gmt":"2015-01-05T09:57:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=116221"},"modified":"2015-01-05T12:01:22","modified_gmt":"2015-01-05T10:01:22","slug":"netflix-in-sa-vpn-blocking-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/116221-netflix-in-sa-vpn-blocking-update.html","title":{"rendered":"Netflix in SA \u2014\u00a0VPN blocking update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TorrentFreak recently reported that Netflix had cracked down on virtual private network (VPN) and proxy \u201cpirates\u201d, saying that VPN providers such as TorGuard had noticed a surge in access problems by its users from mid-December.<\/p>\n<p>Netflix is only available in around 50 countries, with content libraries varying from one territory to the next.<\/p>\n<p>To work around these restrictions, many users employ VPNs or unblocking services such as UnoTelly and Unblock-us.<\/p>\n<p>Movie studios are unhappy about users accessing services such as Netflix outside their designated regions, and <a href=\"http:\/\/torrentfreak.com\/netflix-cracks-down-on-vpn-and-proxy-pirates-150103\/\" target=\"_blank\">TorrentFreak reported<\/a> it was these studios who requested the changes be implemented by Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>Hulu implemented similar restrictions in April 2014, so Netflix\u2019s move to block VPNs wasn\u2019t much of a surprise, TorrentFreak said.<\/p>\n<p>However, following these reports, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2015\/01\/03\/netflix-clamps-down-on-vpns\/\" target=\"_blank\">Netflix told Engadget<\/a> that it had made no recent change in the way it handles VPNs.<\/p>\n<p>PC Magazine reported that it had received similar feedback from the service provider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe use industry standard methods to block VPNs.
