The Sunday Tribune has reported that Eskom\u2019s electricity generation troubles are resulting in traffic chaos, increased crime, sewage spills, and slow economic growth.<\/p>\n
Last week nearly 36% of Eskom\u2019s generating capacity was offline, which resulted in controlled\u00a0blackouts across the country. This, the Sunday Tribune said, is expected to continue.<\/p>\n
According to the report South Africa\u2019s electricity troubles will last for between two and five years.<\/p>\n
Many services relying on a steady electricity supply are affected by Eskom\u2019s troubles. These include traffic lights, water works, and security.<\/p>\n
The newspaper reported that there is already an increase in accidents on the roads, and security companies are reporting more house burglaries during load shedding.<\/p>\n
Water pollution is also on the rise as sewage pump stations are ill prepared for prolonged power blackouts.<\/p>\n
South Africans are looking to President Jacob Zuma to provide solutions to the current electricity crisis in his State of the Nation address (SONA) on 12 February 2015.<\/p>\n
Many people expect Zuma to unveil a rescue plan which was approved by the ANC\u2019s national executive committee and cabinet.<\/p>\n
Some of the possible solutions include the prioritisation of power producing projects, alternative power sources, and nuclear energy.<\/p>\n
