“The suspects appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court today. They were remanded and the case has been postponed to the 25th of April,” Colonel Tummi Golding said. <\/p>\n
The two men, aged 25 and 30, were arrested in raids on their homes in Bavaria and Garsfontein in Pretoria last month. <\/p>\n
They were charged with identity fraud and detained at Sunnyside police station.<\/p>\n
During the raids, police found and confiscated three laptops, two desktop computers and four cell phones, Golding said. <\/p>\n
The suspects were also found in possession of counterfeit cards and manufacturing equipment as well as card data that linked them to the skimming of debit and credit cards.<\/p>\n
The phishing scam is believed to have tricked people into divulging their on-line banking details.<\/p>\n
The raids began in February as part of an operation conducted by the Absa Fraud Risk Management team and SAPS commercial crime units, said Absa spokesman Patrick Wadula in a statement. <\/p>\n
Five people have been arrested in connection with the scam so far.<\/p>\n
