The 2015 Student Tech Survey reveals that Facebook is\u00a0the default social network among students, while WhatsApp is the dominant messaging service.<\/p>\n

The survey was conducted across South African tertiary education institutions by World Wide Worx and Student Brands.<\/p>\n

More than 2,300 students participated in the survey, conducted to establish trends in the student technology landscape.<\/p>\n

According to the survey, 97% of respondents used Facebook. Twitter came in second at 67%, followed by YouTube with 44%, and LinkedIn with 36%.<\/p>\n

WhatsApp dominated the messaging market with 92% of students using it for their instant messaging needs. It was followed by Facebook Messenger with 55% and BBM with 48%.<\/p>\n

WeChat is used by 22% of the student market, with Mxit enjoying 17% market penetration.<\/p>\n

Smartphone choices<\/h3>\n

The survey also revealed that 38% of respondents use Android devices, overtaking BlackBerry – the previous leading operating system – which\u00a0is currently at 32%.<\/p>\n

11% of students still use feature phones, while the Windows Mobile operating system is used by 7%, marginally ahead of Apple\u2019s iOS.<\/p>\n

BlackBerry\u00a0is still in\u00a0the number one spot in terms of brand of phone used by students, ahead of Samsung at 27% and Nokia at 21%.<\/p>\n

When asked for their brand preference regardless of affordability, one out of every two respondents chose the Apple iPhone. Samsung came in second at 29%, and Sony in third place at 9%.<\/p>\n

According to student intentions, 43% will buy a Samsung phone next, with the iPhone coming in second at 17%, followed by Nokia at 11%, and BlackBerry still making a showing at 10%.<\/p>\n
