MTN has released its financial results for the year ended 31 December 2014, which highlighted the company\u2019s multi-billion rand network investment plans.<\/p>\n
The company said over the last year it added 520 new 2G sites and 904 3G sites. MTN\u2019s 3G South African population coverage improved to 87%.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a result of improved performance in the second half – with voice traffic volumes up 31% year on year and growing demand for data – we will increase capex significantly in 2015,\u201d MTN said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will be focused on improving the quality and capacity of the 2G and 3G network and rolling out LTE\u201d.<\/p>\n
While MTN South Africa\u2019s total revenue declined by 3.9% to R38.9 billion, data revenue increased by 7%. By year-end, data revenue made up\u00a023.8% of total revenue for MTN SA.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile data revenue only increased 7% there was a meaningful improvement in the fourth quarter with mobile data revenue growth of 17% when compared to the same period last year.”<\/p>\n
Fourth quarter 2014 on third quarter 2014 mobile data revenue growth for MTN SA was 42.3%.<\/p>\n
This growth was thanks to increased 3G coverage, improved smartphone adoption, and tailored data bundles.<\/p>\n
The number of smartphones on MTN\u2019s network increased by 17.8% to 5.9 million, and the number of data users increased by 20.1% to 17.1 million.<\/p>\n
