State-owned broadcasting signal distributor Sentech has completed the rollout of South Africa\u2019s digital terrestrial television (DTT) infrastructure.<\/p>\n
This involved the upgrading of 178 transmitter stations nationwide.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe last of Sentech\u2019s DTT migration sites situated in Napier, Western Cape was switched on yesterday afternoon, thus ensuring the digital terrestrial population coverage to be 84.23% and the geographic coverage 57.99%,\u201d Sentech said.<\/p>\n
Those not covered by the DTT signal will instead receive their TV signal via a direct-to-home satellite service, which Sentech said is already available.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been an intensive and fruitful journey for us, we have come a long way from our first transmitter switch on in the DVB-T2 standard in the 2011\/2012 financial year,\u201d said Setumo Mohapi, CEO of Sentech.<\/p>\n
Mohapi said the fact that Sentech\u2019s DTT build was completed just after Cabinet approved the Broadcasting Digital Migration Policy was \u201copportune\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom this point on, we will be focusing on stabilization and testing of the network in order to ensure commercial readiness.”<\/p>\n
