WhatsApp voice calling<\/strong><\/a> is here. Well, sort of, if you have an Android device, the latest version of the service, and get someone who has got it working to give you a call<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

While WhatsApp voice calling means cheap – or free over Wi-Fi – phone calls, it also means mobile operators are freaking out. Their voice revenues are about to hit the decline.<\/p>\n

As you read this, the four companies are meeting in the WhatsApp War Room to discuss the way forward.<\/p>\n

“We have to stop WhatsApp voice calling. Does anyone have any ideas?” asks Vodacom.<\/p>\n

“We can offer WhatsApp’s head honchos a bribe to stay out of SA. Maybe two tickets to all Sharks games?” suggests Cell C.<\/p>\n

“No ways, that will never work. Season tickets to the Lions games… wait, do we still sponsor the Lions?” says MTN.<\/p>\n

“The Sharks are rubbish, and no, you don’t sponsor the Lions anymore MTN. Season tickets to the Bulls games will do the trick,” says Vodacom.<\/p>\n

“We can offer them tickets, too,” says Telkom. “Not sure for what, though, we sponsor all kinds of things that the government tells us to.”<\/p>\n

“I think we do swimming, and soccer, and The New Age breakfast briefings. Maybe they would like to have eggs and bacon with Faith Muthambi?”<\/p>\n

After a moment’s silence, the operators knowingly look at one another: the time of WhatsApp is here, and traditional voice calls are set to die.<\/p>\n
