Update<\/strong><\/p>\n

Power supply is stable, utility Eskom said on Monday.<\/p>\n

“At this stage, the system is constrained but stable,” its media desk said.<\/p>\n

“The risk of load shedding is there if anything unexpected happens.”<\/p>\n

Earlier in March, Eskom said unit six at its newly-built Medupi power station in Limpopo produced power for the first time.<\/p>\n

“The electricity flowing into the grid marks a new beginning,” Eskom chief executive Tshediso Matona said at the time.<\/p>\n

“Within the next three months, South Africa will see Medupi unit six’s full potential of 794MW being fed into the South African national grid.”<\/p>\n

This was the first of Medupi power station’s six units to be synchronised. Synchronisation involves the generator being connected to the grid so its power is aligned with all the other generators to deliver electricity.<\/p>\n

Eskom has issued a load shedding alert for 16 March 2015, stating there is a medium probability of power cuts during the day.<\/p>\n

The chance of load shedding being implemented increases in the evening, with Eskom saying there is a “high probability” of power cuts as people return home.<\/p>\n

The power utility recently switched on\u00a0unit 6 at the Medupi power station, which will add much-needed electricity to the national grid.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithin the next three months, South Africa will see Medupi unit six\u2019s full potential of 794MW being fed into the South African national grid,\u201d Eskom chief executive Tshediso Matona said.<\/p>\n

Medupi\u2019s total output of 4,764MW is only expected to be synchronised to the grid by 2019.<\/p>\n
