{"id":122916,"date":"2015-04-14T21:44:23","date_gmt":"2015-04-14T19:44:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=122916"},"modified":"2015-04-15T09:27:56","modified_gmt":"2015-04-15T07:27:56","slug":"south-african-university-internet-speed-shootout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/122916-south-african-university-internet-speed-shootout.html","title":{"rendered":"South African University Internet speed shootout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last few years SANReN, in collaboration with the Tertiary Education and Research Network of South Africa (TENET), <a title=\"Sanren Network\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/67036-10gbps-sanren-network-grows.html\"><strong>connected most South African universities<\/strong><\/a> to its\u00a0fibre backbone at 10Gbps.<\/p>\n<p>These high-speed connections mean that South African students experience excellent Internet speeds on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Many real-world speed tests show performance of well above 100Mbps. This is much higher than the peak speeds of most residential and business connections.<\/p>\n<p>However, not all universities and campuses are equal, notably so when looking at international bandwidth.<\/p>\n<p>This article provides an overview of the Internet connection speeds of South Africa\u2019s largest universities.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Local university connectivity<\/h3>\n<p>TENET executive Geoff Hoy explained that most prominent South African universities have 10Gbps last-mile connections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call this national bandwidth and we are connected to JINX, CINX, and NapAfrica peer points in Johannesburg and Cape Town,\u201d said Hoy.<\/p>\n<p>Hoy said\u00a0all traffic served via Google and Akamai is\u00a0local traffic, providing students with a great experience from these platforms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_122922\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sanren-network.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122922\" class=\"size-full wp-image-122922\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sanren-network.jpg\" alt=\"Sanren network\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sanren-network.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sanren-network-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-122922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sanren network<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">International connectivity<\/h3>\n<p>International bandwidth, which is provisioned over Seacom and WACS, is the biggest differentiator when looking at local universities&#8217; Internet speeds.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Cape Town main campus is the international bandwidth leader at\u00a01.5Gbps.<\/p>\n<p>UCT is followed by Stellenbosch University&#8217;s main campus with 956Mbps, and NWU&#8217;s main campus with 696Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>The following table provides an overview of the Internet connectivity speeds of South African universities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mybb_table\">\n<div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\" style=\"width: 100%;\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"7\">\n<thead>\n<tr style=\"background-color: #06518a;
