Vodacom has\u00a0launched voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) calling on its network.<\/p>\n
From 11 April 2015, owners of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will be able to make voice calls over Vodacom\u2019s LTE network without having to fall back to circuit-switched voice.<\/p>\n
For now, VoLTE is limited to contract subscribers who have compatible handsets. There is no additional charge to use the service.<\/p>\n
Vodacom made its first successful VoLTE call in September 2014, but said it has not been able to launch the service due to a lack of compatible devices.<\/p>\n
VoLTE technology carries mobile voice traffic natively over the LTE data network, and according to Vodacom it will bring faster dialing, better call quality, and new technical capabilities to the latest smartphones.<\/p>\n
\u201cVodacom is the first mobile network to make VoLTE commercially available in South Africa,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n
To enable VoLTE, subscribers with compatible handsets will need to run a software update. Vodacom said the update will be available from 11 April.<\/p>\n
