{"id":124952,"date":"2015-04-23T12:33:47","date_gmt":"2015-04-23T10:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=124952"},"modified":"2015-04-23T12:36:08","modified_gmt":"2015-04-23T10:36:08","slug":"project-fi-12c-per-mb-no-data-expiry-mobile-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/124952-project-fi-12c-per-mb-no-data-expiry-mobile-network.html","title":{"rendered":"Project Fi: 12c per MB, no data expiry mobile network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On\u00a022 April Google launched\u00a0its mobile virtual network operator in partnership with two mobile networks in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Called \u201cProject Fi\u201d, this new mobile service provider will connect subscribers to the best network available to them in an area, whether Wi-Fi or cellular.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you go about your day, Project Fi automatically connects you to more than a million free, open Wi-Fi hotspots we&#8217;ve verified as fast and reliable,\u201d said Nick Fox, head of communications products at Google.<\/p>\n<p>When Project Fi connects to an open Wi-Fi network, Google said it secures the connection with a virtual private network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis secure connection protects your data from being looked at by other users,&#8221; said Fox.<\/p>\n<p>Calls will transition seamlessly between cell networks and Wi-Fi networks, and your phone number will not be linked to only a device. Any device that supports Google Hangouts can be linked to your number.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xfFHnBQ6nQg\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Nexus-only<\/h3>\n<p>At launch, Project Fi was only available on Google\u2019s Nexus 6.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt works with the Project Fi SIM card, which supports multiple cellular networks, and a state-of-the-art cellular radio tuned to work across network types,&#8221;\u00a0Google says in its <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fi.google.com\/about\/faq\/#supported-devices-1\" target=\"_blank\">FAQ<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Google only plans to support the Nexus 6 during its early access programme for Project Fi.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Pricing<\/h3>\n<p>The Google Fi base package costs $20 (excluding taxes), and includes \u201call the basics\u201d, Google said: unlimited domestic voice calls, texts, Wi-Fi tethering, and international coverage in over 120 countries.<\/p>\n<p>International voice calls and some voice calls in the US do attract additional fees.<\/p>\n<p>Mobile data can be bought for $10 per Gigabyte (excluding taxes), and can be used in the US and while travelling abroad &#8211;\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fi.google.com\/about\/rates\/\" target=\"_blank\">including South Africa<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While roaming internationally most data connectivity will run on 3G networks and be limited to speeds of 256kb per second.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike mobile networks in South Africa, data does not expire after a certain period.
