with most attack traffic originating in\u00a0China.<\/p>\n<p>Akamai maintains a distributed set of agents deployed across the Internet that monitor attack traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Based on data collected by these agents, Akamai is able to identify the countries from which attack traffic originates, as well as the ports targeted by these attacks.<\/p>\n<p>During Q4 2014, Akamai observed attack traffic originating from 199 countries, in line with the 201 seen in the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p>China remained well ahead of other countries, with more than three times the observed attack traffic when compared to\u00a0the United States &#8211; which is in second place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_125082\" style=\"width: 566px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Attack-traffic-by-country.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125082\" class=\"size-full wp-image-125082\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Attack-traffic-by-country.jpg\" alt=\"Attack traffic by country\" width=\"556\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Attack-traffic-by-country.jpg 556w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Attack-traffic-by-country-457x400.jpg 457w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 556px) 100vw, 556px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-125082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Attack traffic by country<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Top attack ports<\/h3>\n<p>In Q4 2014 the percentage of observed attack traffic targeting Port 23 (Telnet) increased significantly.<\/p>\n<p>This increase may indicate a growth in attacks relying on brute-force login attempts or those that exploit default usernames and passwords to gain access to vulnerable systems.<\/p>\n<p>These attacks can be perpetrated by bots that scan for systems with Port 23 open then try to login when finding such a port.<\/p>\n<p>All other ports in the top 10 increased their percentages as well, with significant increases for Ports 445 (Microsoft-DS), 8080 (http Alternate), 3389 (Microsoft Terminal Services), and 22 (ssh).<\/p>\n<p>In total, attack traffic to the top 10 ports made up 79% of all observed attack traffic &#8211;
