{"id":125598,"date":"2015-05-05T15:28:21","date_gmt":"2015-05-05T13:28:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=125598"},"modified":"2015-05-05T16:45:26","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T14:45:26","slug":"more-mtn-gallo-manor-data-centre-downtime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/125598-more-mtn-gallo-manor-data-centre-downtime.html","title":{"rendered":"MTN Gallo Manor data centre DDoSed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another disruption in services hit MTN\u2019s data centre in Gallo Manor, Johannesburg on 5 May, with administrators complaining the servers they host there have disappeared off the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after a power outage due to load shedding <a title=\"Load shedding wipes out MTN data centre\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hosting-storage\/125490-load-shedding-wipes-out-mtn-data-centre.html\"><strong>brought the data centre to its knees<\/strong><\/a> on 3 May, when MTN\u2019s backup power generators didn\u2019t kick in.<\/p>\n<p>The power spike that accompanied the load shedding damaged \u201ca number of nodes,\u201d said MTN, causing a cluster in the data centre to fail.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/696850-MTN-Business-Gallo-Manor-datacenter-outage-03-May-2015%22%3EMTN\">Reports from clients<\/a><\/strong> who were in contact with MTN suggest the network operator did not have the necessary spares available to repair\u00a0the damaged equipment.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear what caused the recent outage, though initial indications are that it is not related to the earlier downtime.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for MTN was not immediately available for comment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong>\u00a0MTN chief technology officer Eben Albertyn has provided the following feedback.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>MTN experienced packet loss on some of its nodes that service the Gallo Manor area. Our assessment is that our network suffered a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack which is hampering our ability to provide connectivity services. Our engineers worked fervently to fully restore services and avert further attacks. Our connectivity is now fully restored. The interruption lasted only a few minutes and is completely unrelated to the outage experienced on Monday.
