The Oculus Rift will ship to consumers in Q1 2016 and pre-orders will open later this year, Oculus VR has announced<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Further details around technical hardware specifications, software, input, and many unannounced made-for-VR games will be revealed in the weeks ahead, Oculus added.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the earliest days of the Oculus Kickstarter, the Rift has been shaped by gamers, backers, developers, and enthusiasts around the world,\u201d Oculus VR said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Rift delivers on the dream of consumer VR with compelling content, a full ecosystem, and a fully integrated hardware\/software tech stack designed specifically for virtual reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oculus launched its Kickstarter during January 2013, asking for $250,000 and raising over $2.4-million.<\/p>\n

id Software founder John Carmack, who is behind 3D video games such as Doom and Quake, then joined Oculus in August 2013<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In March 2014, Oculus infamously sold to Facebook for $2-billion, riling many of the project\u2019s original Kickstarter backers<\/strong><\/a> and other supporters.<\/p>\n

Since then, a number of other companies have thrown their hat into the virtual reality (VR) ring, with Samsung and Oculus launching a smartphone-based headset<\/strong><\/a> called the Gear VR.<\/p>\n

Sony has also unveiled a VR headset for its PlayStation video game console called Project Morpheus, while PC gaming juggernaut Valve announced Steam VR.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, HTC made the surprise announcement at Mobile World Congress that it too would enter the VR game in partnership with Valve, with a VR system it called the HTC Vive<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“Virtual reality is going to transform gaming, film, entertainment, communication, and much more,” Oculus said.<\/p>\n
