Google is working on a Chrome extension it’s calling Tone, which allows PCs to send a URL to nearby machines using a burst of sound.<\/p>\n
The receiving PCs must also have Tone installed and a working microphone, and upon receiving the sound will automatically open the relevant tab in Chrome.<\/p>\n
“Tone grew out of the idea that while digital communication methods like email and chat have made it infinitely easier, cheaper, and faster to share things with people across the globe, they’ve actually made it more complicated to share things with the people standing right next to you,” said Google.<\/p>\n
Tone’s sound bursts don’t pass through walls, and are reliable over short distances in the majority of environments, the company said.<\/p>\n
“To get started, first install the Tone extension for Chrome<\/a><\/strong>. Then simply open a tab with the URL you want to share, make sure your volume is on, and press the Tone button.”<\/p>\n The video below briefly details Google Tone.<\/p>\n
