Telkom yesterday released their financial results for six months ending March 31, 2010, revealing declining profits and a significant drop in the company’s number of fixed lines.<\/p>\n

According to the company’s latest results they now have 4,273,000 fixed lines, down from 4,451,000 a year ago.  This equates to a drop of 178,000 fixed lines over the last 12 months, the biggest decline in recent years.<\/p>\n

This drop in the number of fixed lines means that the country’s fixed line penetration rate declined to 8.7%, down from 9.6% in 2005.<\/p>\n

The decline in fixed line numbers is however nothing new.  Since Telkom’s fixed line numbers peaked at 5.5 million in 2000 there has been a steady yearly decline in fixed line subscriber numbers which seems to be accelerating.<\/p>\n
