{"id":13395,"date":"2010-06-29T20:41:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-29T18:41:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2010-06-29T20:41:00","modified_gmt":"2010-06-29T18:41:00","slug":"cellular-call-price-cuts-needed-says-experts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/13395-cellular-call-price-cuts-needed-says-experts.html","title":{"rendered":"Cellular call price cuts needed, says experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa&rsquo;s (ICASA&rsquo;s) public hearings for the Draft Call Termination Regulations are currently under way with South Africa&rsquo;s telecoms operators battling it out to have their way with the regulator.<\/p>\n<p>High interconnect rates have been blamed for the country&rsquo;s high mobile call rates, but certain parties argue that the <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/Cellular\/11449.html\">mobile interconnect price cuts which kicked in on 1 March<\/a> had no real effect on consumer pricing.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to eNews <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?245577-Howard-Sackstein\">Howard Sackstein<\/a><\/strong>, Executive Director of Saicom Voice Services, said that he has seen no change in their mobile bills from March, adding that prices have even increased in some cases.&nbsp; Sackstein runs around 100,000 cellular accounts which gives a good overview of average cellular call prices.<\/p>\n<p>Sackstein said that prices from the mobile operators have not decreased as expected after the March mobile termination rate cuts, and apart from some &lsquo;window dressing&rsquo; from Vodacom, MTN and Cell C no significant price changes have been seen.<\/p>\n<p>World Wide Worx Strategy director <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?245575-Steven-Ambrose\">Steven Ambrose<\/a><\/strong> said that it is not surprising that mobile call rates did not decrease.&nbsp; He added that interconnect rates are only one of the factors to blame for high mobile call rates.<\/p>\n<p>The cellular providers told ICASA that a more gradual glide path is needed for them to adapt their business models and accommodate the lower mobile termination rates, but Ambrose told eNews that he believes a glide path is unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>Ambrose said that ICASA must decide on an appropriate call termination rate and implement it.&nbsp; It will then be up to the telecoms operators to adapt their business models quickly and ensure that they remain competitive.<\/p>\n<p>Ambrose further said that the telecoms players should bring down the current &lsquo;exorbitant call rates&rsquo; in real terms &ndash; something which consumers can feel.&nbsp; &ldquo;They are currently just playing with numbers,&rdquo; said Ambrose.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?245573-Cellular-price-cuts-needed-says-experts\">Retail mobile call prices<\/a><\/strong> &lt;&lt; comments and views<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite mobile termination rate (MTR) cuts in March, some people argue that mobile prices did not drop and may have even increased<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-13395","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cellular"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/13395"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=13395"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/13395\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=13395"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=13395"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=13395"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
