Microsoft Edge will get support for Google\u2019s open source WebM video file format, Windows Central reports<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The news comes via a Microsoft developer feedback forum where SteveG asked for native WebM support<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

WebM is a video file format released in 2010, which caused a stir when Google announced in 2011 that Chrome would not support H.264 video within HTML5 <video><\/code> tags.<\/p>\n

The search giant argued that the proprietary nature of H.264 would stifle innovation<\/strong><\/a>, and it threw its weight behind WebM – which was originally built to be a royalty-free alternative to\u00a0HTML5 video.<\/p>\n

MPEG-LA administers the patent pool for H.264<\/a><\/strong>, and among the licensors are: Apple, Dolby, LG, Microsoft, Samsung, and Sony.<\/p>\n

Until now, the web browsers from Apple (Safari) and Microsoft (Internet Explorer) did not support open standards such as WebM and Ogg, opting instead to offer only MP4 (H.264) support for HTML5 video.<\/p>\n
