The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa should act swiftly to address the monopoly over premium content in the country, Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko said at Satnac 2015.<\/p>\n
While Maseko did not name the “monopoly”, it is no secret that Naspers controls premium broadcast content in South Africa through MultiChoice – which operates DStv.<\/p>\n
Naspers also recently launched ShowMax, a Netflix-like subscription video on demand service which aims to compete with the American streaming giant.<\/p>\n
Much of the country\u2019s premiere live sporting content is exclusive to SuperSport, and M-Net holds the exclusive broadcasting rights to many popular TV shows.<\/p>\n
SuperSport 1 and 2, which focuses on popular sports such as rugby, cricket, tennis, and motorsport, as well as M-Net\u2019s premium channels, are only available on DStv\u2019s top-end package.<\/p>\n
DStv Premium costs R699 per month, or R784 per month including the access fee for personal video recording services and other features.<\/p>\n
