{"id":137578,"date":"2015-09-07T11:27:40","date_gmt":"2015-09-07T09:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=137578"},"modified":"2015-09-07T11:29:16","modified_gmt":"2015-09-07T09:29:16","slug":"telkom-testing-local-loop-unbundling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/137578-telkom-testing-local-loop-unbundling.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom testing local loop unbundling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom is going to offer\u00a0a version\u00a0of local loop unbundling (LLU) at around 200 of its exchanges, which CEO Sipho Maseko said is\u00a0paving the way for more more open-access broadband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past we would fiercely oppose LLU,\u201d said Maseko, speaking at Satnac 2015, but Telkom has changed its perspective on wholesale open-access networks.<\/p>\n<p>News that Telkom would open its\u00a0exchanges <a title=\"Telkom plans to open its exchanges to ISPs to boost broadband\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/133414-telkom-plans-to-open-its-exchanges-to-isps-to-boost-broadband.html\"><strong>first emerged in the company\u2019s annual report<\/strong><\/a>, where it said it was trying to stimulate broadband access in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Local loop unbundling has been a long time coming in South Africa, with former Minister of Communications Ivy Matsepe Casaburri stating\u00a0that the process should be urgently completed by 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The November 2011 deadline was missed, and resulted in a spate of new deadlines being announced and missed.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services Siyabonga Cwele announced plans to have an approved LLU strategy by March 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Details of Telkom&#8217;s LLU&#8217;s plans have not been revealed, but\u00a0the operator said it is analysing how best to structure the service.
