{"id":141386,"date":"2015-10-09T14:44:17","date_gmt":"2015-10-09T12:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=141386"},"modified":"2015-10-09T14:46:25","modified_gmt":"2015-10-09T12:46:25","slug":"3-proposed-principles-for-online-content-blocking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/141386-3-proposed-principles-for-online-content-blocking.html","title":{"rendered":"3 proposed principles for online content blocking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Content blocking is a hot topic after Apple\u2019s iOS joined the desktop market by making it possible to develop iOS applications to block advertisements.<\/p>\n<p>Denelle Dixon-Thayer, chief legal and business officer at Mozilla Corporation, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blog\/2015\/10\/07\/proposed-principles-for-content-blocking\/\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a><\/strong> content blocking is not going away \u2013 it is now part of everyone\u2019s online experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsers want it \u2013 whether to avoid the display of ads, protect against unwanted tracking, improve load speed, or reduce data consumption,\u201d said Dixon-Thayer.<\/p>\n<p>She said they needed to address how the industry should respond, and Mozilla wanted to start by proposing principles for content blocking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo help guide our efforts and hopefully inform others, we\u2019ve developed three proposed content blocking principles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Content Neutrality:<\/strong> Content blocking software should focus on addressing potential user needs (such as on performance, security, and privacy) instead of blocking specific types of content (such as advertising).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transparency and Control:<\/strong> The content blocking software should provide users with transparency and meaningful controls over the needs it is attempting to address.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Openness:<\/strong> Blocking should maintain a level playing field and should block under the same principles regardless of source of the content.
