{"id":14304,"date":"2010-08-06T13:46:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-06T11:46:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2010-08-06T13:46:00","modified_gmt":"2010-08-06T11:46:00","slug":"dvb-h-mobile-tv-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/14304-dvb-h-mobile-tv-update.html","title":{"rendered":"DVB-H Mobile TV Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile TV broadcasting has been on the cards since 2005, with <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/nephp\/413.html\" target=\"_blank\">predictions that it would be &#8220;all over the place&#8221; by 2008<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In May the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/12569-Mobile-The-winners-and-losers.html\" target=\"_blank\">(ICASA) disqualified various players<\/a>&nbsp;including Mobile TV Consortium, Super5 and MultiChoice from the Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Digital Video Broadcasting &ndash; Handheld (DVB-H) spectrum for not complying to various requirements of the process.<\/p>\n<p>Only e.tv&#8217;s application complied to ICASA&#8217;s preliminary requirements, but they have yet to receive their license.<\/p>\n<p>ICASA spokesperson, Paseka Maleka, said that the &ldquo;first round of the ITA&rdquo;, where only e.tv complied, is almost finished and that &ldquo;the Authority has been in contact with e.tv in that regard.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks after the disqualifications ICASA reissued the ITA for 60% of Spectrum 1. This time applicants had almost 4 weeks to respond (28 June 2010 being the deadline) rather than the 3 weeks they had the first time round.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice and Super 5 Media both lodged new applications for DVB-H spectrum. Media <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcentral.co.za\/end-of-the-line-for-super-5-media\/16004\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports suggest that Super 5 Media is no more<\/a>, meaning that South Africa will have one less player in mobile TV broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The second round of the ITA is also at an advanced stage.
