An international media report recently revealed<\/strong><\/a> that marketers and agencies are testing \u201cnever-before-available data from cellphone carriers\u201d.<\/p>\n

The data which these companies get from cellular operators connects device location and other information with the telecom provider\u2019s real-world files on subscribers.<\/p>\n

According to the Advertising Age, many large IT players are involved in the project – including mobile carriers Verizon, Sprint, and Telefonica, and big IT companies SAP, IBM, and HP.<\/p>\n

Supplying data about their subscribers is seen as a potential new revenue stream for mobile operators, which have been struggling with growth.<\/p>\n

This raises the question as to whether South African mobile operators are selling user data, or are partnering with companies and sharing information about their subscribers.<\/p>\n

MyBroadband asked SA’s mobile operators whether they are sharing or selling data about their\u00a0subscribers. The results are detailed\u00a0below.<\/p>\n
