Games listed on Steam will soon be priced in rand, Valve told SA users in an e-mail.<\/p>\n
Steam is an online\u00a0store for digital PC games which supports\u00a0Windows, OS X, and Linux.<\/p>\n
Valve said if your Steam wallet has money in it on 10 November 2015, your US dollar balance will be converted into rand – at the\u00a0relevant market value exchange rate.<\/p>\n
Rumours that Steam would sell video games in rand surfaced earlier this year when the Steam Database discovered ten new currencies<\/strong><\/a> within a beta build of the software.<\/p>\n As of 1 June 2014, the South African government requires VAT be collected on goods and services sold to South Africans online.<\/p>\n Some online shops and service providers increased prices after the digital VAT was introduced<\/strong><\/a>, but Steam was not among them.<\/p>\n While the Steam storefront does display the wording \u201cVAT included in all prices where applicable\u201d, invoices on recent purchases indicate that no sales tax was paid.<\/p>\n Even if VAT is introduced on Steam purchases, it is not clear whether South Africans will pay more for games.<\/p>\n Valve was asked if it would comply with SA\u2019s digital VAT laws, but the company did not respond.<\/p>\n Steam Controller confirmed for South Africa<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Steam online video game store getting rand support?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Alienware Alpha \u201cSteam Machine\u201d gets SA pricing<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\nWhat about digital VAT?<\/h3>\n
