4G.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom proudly describes its LTE network as 4G (which is technically incorrect), despite the fact it fiercely attacked Cell C for not accurately using the term 4G.<\/p>\n<p>To add fuel to the fire, Vodacom\u00a0placed a massive\u00a0billboard opposite Cell C\u2019s head office in Midrand, describing\u00a0its network as 4G.<\/p>\n<p>The photo below shows the Vodacom billboard and Cell C\u2019s head office (building on right)\u00a0along the N1 freeway.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_145963\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Vodacom-4G-billboard-close-to-Cell-C-office.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145963\" class=\"wp-image-145963\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Vodacom-4G-billboard-close-to-Cell-C-office.jpg\" alt=\"Vodacom 4G billboard close to Cell C office\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Vodacom-4G-billboard-close-to-Cell-C-office.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Vodacom-4G-billboard-close-to-Cell-C-office-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Vodacom-4G-billboard-close-to-Cell-C-office-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-145963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vodacom 4G billboard close to Cell C office<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">What is 4G, and why is it an issue in South Africa?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/18987-4g-fight-continues-cell-c-vs-vodacom-and-mtn.html\"><strong>In 2010, Vodacom and MTN attacked Cell C<\/strong><\/a> for describing its new 21Mbps HSPA+ network as 4G, and lodged complaints with the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Cell C marketed its mobile broadband network and services as \u201c4Gs\u201d, which the company explained stood for \u201c4 Great Service\u201d and \u201c4 Great Speed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom and MTN argued that Cell C was misleading consumers with its\u00a0claims of having built a 4G network.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/18987-4g-fight-continues-cell-c-vs-vodacom-and-mtn.html\"><strong>Vodacom used the International Telecommunication Union\u2019s (ITU\u2019s) definition<\/strong> <\/a>of 4G to substantiate its argument.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C argued that many operators and other companies described their HSPA+ and LTE networks as 4G.<\/p>\n<p>It said\u00a0that using the term 4G would help consumers understand it was offering faster broadband services.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/17407-4g-battle-between-cell-c-vodacom-and-mtn-turned-on-its-head.html\"><strong>Even the ITU recognised<\/strong><\/a> that the term 4G is often used by companies to describe technologies like LTE, WiMax, and HSPA+.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom dismissed this justification, saying that Cell C must abide by the ITU\u2019s definition of 4G &#8211;
