{"id":15189,"date":"2010-09-15T10:57:00","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T08:57:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2010-09-15T10:57:00","modified_gmt":"2010-09-15T08:57:00","slug":"mtn-to-use-900-mhz-for-3g-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/15189-mtn-to-use-900-mhz-for-3g-in-sa.html","title":{"rendered":"MTN to use 900 MHz for 3G in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bloomberg today announced that MTN will use some of its 900 megahertz spectrum for 3G services.&nbsp; The lower frequency, MTN typically uses 2100 MHz for its 3G network in South Africa, makes wider coverage possible using less sites.<\/p>\n<p>This announcement follows the launch of Cell C&rsquo;s 900 MHz UMTS network in Port Elizabeth two weeks ago.&nbsp; Cell C is rolling out a country wide 21 Mbps HSPA+ network in South Africa by re-farming some of its 900 MHz spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>The use of 900 MHz for 3G is however nothing new for MTN.&nbsp; Earlier this year MTN Ghana announced that it had concluded successful trials of the first 900 MHz UMTS network in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>MTN worked with Ericsson on their 900 MHz 3G network in Ghana, and found that the lower frequency means that they can create country-wide mobile broadband coverage far more cost effectively.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/13327-Vodacom-testing-900-MHz-broadband-services.html\">Vodacom is also trialing the use of 900 MHz for 3G<\/a> use but the complexity of re-farming spectrum, which is currently used for voice services in high density areas, means that it is most likely a solution which (as with MTN) will only be used in rural areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/267689-MTN-to-use-900MHz-spectrum-for-3G\">MTN using 900 MHz for 3G<\/a><\/strong> &lt;&lt; Give your views<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MTN has followed in the footsteps of Cell C to boost the coverage of their mobile broadband offerings<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-15189","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cellular"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/15189"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=15189"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/15189\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=15189"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=15189"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=15189"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
