Netflix has announced it is cracking down on subscribers using VPNs, proxies, and unblockers to get access to the US catalogue.<\/p>\n
Over the last few years, many South Africans have used VPN services like UnoTelly, which allows them to use Netflix US.<\/p>\n
Despite the service launching in SA, subscribers\u00a0still use VPN services because the United States Netflix service offers a larger content catalogue compared to\u00a0the local version.<\/p>\n
David Fullagar, Vice President of Content Delivery Architecture at Netflix, said<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0they are looking to address this issue.<\/p>\n \u201cIf all of our content were globally available, there wouldn\u2019t be a reason for members to use proxies or unblockers to fool our systems into thinking they\u2019re in a different country than they\u2019re actually in,\u201d said Fullagar.<\/p>\n He said they are making progress in licensing content across the world, but\u00a0conceded that they have \u201ca way to go before we can offer people the same films and TV series everywhere\u201d.<\/p>\n As it stands, Netflix\u00a0will continue to enforce content licensing by geographic location.<\/p>\n \u201cTo address this, we will employ similar measures other firms do.”<\/p>\n \u201cThis technology continues to evolve and we are evolving with it.
