Shodan, a search engine for the world\u2019s Internet-connected devices, recently launched a section that lets you browse unsecure webcams.<\/p>\n
Among the live video feeds are marijuana plantations, back rooms of banks, children, kitchens, living rooms, garages, schools, and cash register cameras in retail stores.<\/p>\n
This is according to a report by Ars Technica<\/a><\/strong>, quoting security researcher Dan Tentler.<\/p>\n Ars Technica’s\u00a0search returned images of a sleeping baby in Canada, a kitchen in Spain, a classroom in China, and the entryway to a home.<\/p>\n It stated\u00a0that the cameras are vulnerable because they use the Real Time Streaming Protocol on port 554 to share video, but have no password authentication in place.<\/p>\n Shodan, which crawls IP addresses on the Internet looking for open ports, can discover the feed and take a snapshot.<\/p>\n Although Shodan bills itself as a search engine of the Internet of Things, others have branded the service as a tool of evil<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Check Point recently recommended that enterprises block Shodan\u2019s crawlers<\/a><\/strong>, causing an outcry from members of\u00a0the information security community.<\/p>\n Shodan founder John Matherly defended the service, saying that the “bad guys” don\u2019t need Shodan to hack into vulnerable systems.<\/p>\n Wanted SSA mastermind battled to turn himself in<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Bad passwords: 2011 to 2015<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Fight for more privacy for Internet users<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\nMore security news<\/h3>\n
