{"id":154390,"date":"2016-03-07T10:58:58","date_gmt":"2016-03-07T08:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=154390"},"modified":"2016-03-07T11:00:41","modified_gmt":"2016-03-07T09:00:41","slug":"5-big-blunders-from-telkom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/154390-5-big-blunders-from-telkom.html","title":{"rendered":"5 big blunders from Telkom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom remains the dominant fixed-line telecommunications player in South Africa, with over 3 million fixed voice subscribers and a million ADSL customers.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom also has the most extensive fibre network in South Africa, with over 149,000km of fibre around the country.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom had many successes over the last few decades, but it also made some very costly mistakes along the way.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of Telkom\u2019s biggest blunders in recent years, which include poor investments and questionable decisions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Telkom going into Nigeria through Multi-Links, losing billions of rand<\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Multi-Links.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-139222 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Multi-Links.jpg\" alt=\"Multi-Links\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Multi-Links.jpg 630w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Multi-Links-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Multi-Links-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Telkom purchased 75% of Nigeria&#8217;s Multi-Links for $280 million in March 2007 as part of its African expansion strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/6659-telkom-buys-rest-of-multi-links.html\">the company bought the remaining 25%<\/a><\/strong> of Multi-Links for $125 million &#8211; an investment which many people questioned.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/20527-telkom-s-multi-links-disaster.html\"><strong>Multi-Links bled money for years<\/strong><\/a>, but\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/30018-telkom-lost-over-r7-billion-in-multi-links-failure.html\">Telkom continued to fund the project<\/a><\/strong> without any great upside.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Telkom sold Multi-Links, after\u00a0its failed Nigerian expansion cost the company over R7 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Former <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/52323-telkom-embarrassed-about-nigeria-disaster.html\">Telkom CEO Nombulelo \u201cPinky\u201d Moholi said in 2012<\/a><\/strong> that the company made mistakes in its investments in Africa, calling its Nigerian losses embarrassing.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Telkom selling its share in Vodacom, which gave it billions of rand each year in profits<\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Vodacom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-130874 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Vodacom.jpg\" alt=\"Vodacom logo\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Vodacom.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Vodacom-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Telkom was the majority shareholder in Vodacom after\u00a0the company was founded in the early nineties.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom showed excellent growth in the 90s and 2000s, bolstering Telkom\u2019s coffers with record profits.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom had the option to buy <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.balancingact-africa.com\/news\/en\/issue-no-280\/money\/south-africa-vodafon\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Venfin&#8217;s 15% stake in Vodacom<\/a><\/strong> in 2005 to own a majority of the company. However, it lost out and Vodafone grabbed the share.<\/p>\n<p>The 50\/50 partnership did not work well, and in the end <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/7486-telkom-s-vodacom-transaction-approved.html\">Telkom decided to sell its 50% stake in Vodacom<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcentral.co.za\/telkom-vodacom-sale-a-big-mistake\/45244\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Telkom chief strategy officer Miriam Altman said<\/strong><\/a> in 2013 that selling its 50% stake in Vodacom was one of the company\u2019s biggest mistakes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Telkom Media<\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Telkom-TV.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-84343 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Telkom-TV.jpg\" alt=\"Telkom TV\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Telkom-TV.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Telkom-TV-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Telkom formed Telkom Media in August 2006, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/1306-telkom-media-ready-to-move.html\">received a pay-TV licence<\/a><\/strong> from Icasa in September 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The company said it would invest R7 billion in the new media venture, and planned to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/219-telkom-media-has-big-plans-to-take-on-multichoice.html\">offer a range of entertainment services<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/7443-telkom-seeking-to-wind-up-telkom-media.html\"><strong>In March 2008, Telkom said<\/strong><\/a> it would reduce its funding by R2.2 billion, but then decided to sell the company.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom sold its 75% interest in Telkom Media to Shenzhen Media South Africa for a \u201cnominal amount\u201d in May 2009.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Telkom struggling to keep\u00a0a long-term leader, with 5 CEOs in 10 years<\/h3>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Telkom-logo-on-blue.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-139666\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-139666\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Telkom-logo-on-blue.jpg\" alt=\"Telkom logo on blue\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Telkom-logo-on-blue.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Telkom-logo-on-blue-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/146397-telkom-ceo-salaries-2003-to-2015.html\"><strong>Over the last decade, Telkom had many CEOs<\/strong><\/a>, which started after Sizwe Nxasana left the company in 2005 <strong>[Read:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/17733-telkom-s-ceo-woes-a-retrospective.html\">Telkom&#8217;s leadership struggles<\/a>]<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Nxasana was succeeded by Papi Molotsane, who acted as Telkom CEO from September 2005 until April 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The Telkom veteran Reuben September took over from Molotsane, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/13645-Reuben-September-gone.html\">he led the company until 2010<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Former Cell C CEO Jeffrey Hedberg was named acting Group CEO to replace September, but he did not last long.<\/p>\n<p>In less than a year he was replaced with Pinky Moholi.
