{"id":155030,"date":"2016-02-12T13:01:22","date_gmt":"2016-02-12T11:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=155030"},"modified":"2016-02-12T14:35:39","modified_gmt":"2016-02-12T12:35:39","slug":"anonymous-hacks-sa-government-database","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/155030-anonymous-hacks-sa-government-database.html","title":{"rendered":"Anonymous hacks SA government database"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hackers from the Anonymous collective have hacked a Government Communications and Information Services (GCIS) database as part of \u201cOperation Africa\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and hashed passwords of some 1,500 government employees were posted online.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after Anonymous released a video announcing it had set its sights on Africa, with South Africa high on the list of targets.<\/p>\n<p>Operation Africa, or <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/154460-anc-government-on-anonymous-hack-list.html\"><strong>#OpAfrica<\/strong><\/a>, will focus on the issues of child labour and Internet censorship on the continent, the group said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe focus of the operation is a disassembly of corporations and governments that enable and perpetuate corruption on the African continent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>News of the GCIS hack comes shortly after <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/news.softpedia.com\/news\/anonymous-targets-south-african-government-employees-through-job-portal-hack-500269.shtml\">Softpedia reported<\/a><\/strong> that Anonymous had hacked local job portal V-Report.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the hackers said they had the private details of over 33,000 job seekers, but chose to only publish the data of government officials.<\/p>\n<p>Softpedia provided the following sample of the leaked data:<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Anonymous-targets-SA-government-employees.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-155032\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-155032\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Anonymous-targets-SA-government-employees.jpg\" alt=\"Anonymous targets SA government employees\" width=\"600\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Anonymous-targets-SA-government-employees.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Anonymous-targets-SA-government-employees-120x86.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The State IT Agency (Sita) and V-Report were asked for comment, but\u00a0had not replied by the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that the hackers gained access to an old GCIS portal not widely used anymore, which contained outdated information.
