{"id":157383,"date":"2016-03-06T15:00:36","date_gmt":"2016-03-06T13:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=157383"},"modified":"2016-03-06T15:02:17","modified_gmt":"2016-03-06T13:02:17","slug":"big-increase-in-ddos-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/157383-big-increase-in-ddos-attacks.html","title":{"rendered":"Big increase in DDoS attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Akamai has released its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stateoftheinternet.com\/resources-cloud-security-2015-Q4-web-security-report.html\" target=\"_blank\">Q4 2015 State of the Internet Security Report<\/a><\/strong>, which shows a massive increase in the number of DDoS attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The report shows that stresser or booter-based botnets were the source of the vast majority of DDoS attacks observed by Akamai.<\/p>\n<p>These tools rely heavily on reflection techniques to fuel their traffic.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Turkey appeared as a top attack source &#8211; based on all indicators that Akamai uses to measure DDoS attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat DDoS attacks were the norm, with an average of 24 attacks per target in the last quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Another trend is multi-vectored attacks &#8211; 56% of all DDoS attacks mitigated in Q4 2015 were multi-vectored.<\/p>\n<p>China was the top country sourcing DDoS attacks, while the US was the top country sourcing web application attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The gaming sector was most frequently hit by DDoS attacks, while the retail sector was most frequently targeted in web application attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The list below provides an overview of the DDoS attack statistics in the Akamai report (compared to Q4 2014).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>148.85% increase in total DDoS attacks<\/li>\n<li>168.82% increase in infrastructure layer (layers 3 &amp;
