{"id":161272,"date":"2016-04-19T15:30:53","date_gmt":"2016-04-19T13:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=161272"},"modified":"2016-04-19T15:31:52","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T13:31:52","slug":"poor-mweb-adsl-gaming-performance-complaints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/161272-poor-mweb-adsl-gaming-performance-complaints.html","title":{"rendered":"Poor MWEB ADSL gaming performance complaints"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are no general problems on the MWEB network that cause poor performance for online gamers, the Internet service provider has told MyBroadband.<\/p>\n<p>This follows complaints from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/forums.mweb.co.za\/viewtopic.php?f=138&amp;t=6508&amp;start=120\" target=\"_blank\">Destiny<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/forums.mweb.co.za\/viewtopic.php?f=207&amp;t=8124\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Division<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/forums.mweb.co.za\/viewtopic.php?f=207&amp;t=8133\"><strong>World<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> <strong>Warcraft<\/strong><\/a> players about problems they experienced while trying to play the games over MWEB\u2019s network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a few problems identifying The Division&#8217;s netcode and traffic signature for a day or two after launch, but with some clever monitoring and liaison with our engineers, we have been able to identify and prioritise the traffic effectively,\u201d said MWEB.<\/p>\n<p>MWEB said the complaints it has received since the start of the year are not isolated to it, or South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese issues are experienced all over the world by most providers and many of these errors are not network-connection related.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"howtotestandreportnetworkissues\">How to test and report network issues<\/h3>\n<p>MWEB said\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediacollege.com\/internet\/troubleshooter\/traceroute.html\" target=\"_blank\">a traceroute<\/a><\/strong> to an international destination can go a long way in determining the health of a network\u00a0connection.<\/p>\n<p>If the first 3 hops in the traceroute show numbers higher than 40ms-50ms, MWEB said it is an indication of congestion, and it\u00a0suggests having your last mile investigated.<\/p>\n<p>This means getting Telkom or your fibre provider to look at what is\u00a0causing congestion on their infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the complaints and escalations that we receive are a result of this,\u201d said MWEB.<\/p>\n<p>Another culprit is NAT, or network address translation.
