Afrihost is shutting down its R9-per-month Bronze hosting service, the company said in an e-mail to clients.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese packages were always loss-leaders for us,\u201d said Afrihost.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was always our hope that over time our clients would either upgrade their hosting accounts to larger packages or our overall input costs would decrease and the R9 price point would become sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u00a0said this has not happened for a number of reasons:<\/p>\n

  1. The weakness of the rand against the US dollar.<\/strong> \u201cOur shared hosting platforms are all built around dollar-based software and hardware costs.”<\/li>\n
  2. Eskom has increased the price of electricity<\/strong> over the last 6 years, which is a core input cost.<\/li>\n
  3. Clients did not upgrade from Bronze to Silver.<\/strong> \u201cThe small hosting packages gave so much value\u2026 that the majority of our clients never had the need to upgrade.”<\/li>\n
  4. As times grew tougher in South Africa, the cheap packages grew more popular<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  5. Help requests on cheap packages swamped Afrihost\u2019s support team.<\/strong> \u201cWe are already losing a significant amount on each package\u00a0before other support costs are taken into account.”<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Clients were warned about the change in March, and given until 24\u00a0April to decide whether to upgrade or cancel.<\/p>\n

    Should clients\u00a0not cancel by 24 April, they will be upgraded to Silver hosting at R29 per month.<\/p>\n

    \u201cI understand this is not good news, and I am sincerely sorry that we have to do this,”\u00a0said Afrihost CEO Gian Visser.<\/p>\n

    He said they have beefed up their Silver hosting service, and don\u2019t foresee any price increases on other products.<\/p>\n
