LG will be launching their new Android mobile phone, the Optimus One<\/a>, at an event in Sunninghill, Johannesburg tonight.<\/p>\n

The Optimus One was officially unveiled by LG<\/a> in Seoul, Korea in September along with the Optimus Chic. Both devices run the latest release of Google’s mobile operating system, Android 2.2 , or “FroYo.”<\/p>\n

Most of the high-end Android phones on the market in South Africa now come with Android 2.1, though there are reports that new HTC Desire handsets are being sold already updated to Android 2.2.<\/p>\n

MyBroadband was provided with a test unit and we can confirm some of the technical specifications of the device.<\/p>\n

The use of an ARMv6 processor means that despite the competent specifications of the device, it won’t be able to take advantage of newer developments on the Android platform such as Adobe Flash and AIR, or Firefox Mobile.<\/p>\n

LG South Africa said that the retail package will include a travel adapter, USB cable, set of headphones, and 2GB microSD card.<\/p>\n

Sue Kennedy, Cell C’s executive head of sales and distribution said that the LG Optimus One should be available in November, depending on delivery from LG. “It will be predominantly available as a postpaid device\/offering, but the option of acquisition through prepaid will be available. We will announce pricing closer to launch date,” Kennedy said.<\/p>\n

Senior manager for public relations and commuincations at Cell C, Karin Fourie confirmed that the device would be available from the network in mid-November.<\/p>\n

Stuart Vervliet of LG Mobile Communications said that the device would launch on Cell C, MTN, Vodacom and Virgin Mobile by mid-November. According to Vervliet the device would retail for just under R3000.<\/p>\n
