In the early hours of this morning, Gamerservers.com announced that have opened shop in SA<\/a> and that PC gamers will get local dedicated Call of Duty: Black Ops servers.<\/p>\n

Although MWEB had not announced anything, MyGaming had inside information that the ISP was heavily involved in the project.<\/p>\n

MWEB this morning sent out a PR confirming that they are “exclusive hosts” for Black Ops in SA. <\/p>\n

“This is another partnership that is in line with MWEB’s strategy of collaboration with key providers to deliver a superior Internet experience. In this case not only for the benefit of MWEB customers, but for all South African Internet users,” said Rudi Jansen MWEB Group CEO.<\/p>\n

From the official release<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

MWEB will host Call of Duty: Black Ops in both its Cape Town and Johannesburg data centres to ensure maximum gaming experience for its customers. Non-MWEB customers will also see similar benefits from the local hosting of the game as they will no longer have to connect to international servers. Online gaming will be a key focus for the ISP, where it will be optimising its network to accommodate future top gaming titles hosted in South Africa.<\/em><\/p>\n

Megarom Interactive, who exclusively distributes the retail version of the game in South Africa is thrilled by what this means for the future of gaming in South Africa. “It’s exciting that MWEB recognizes the market of online gaming and that they strive to bring these large gaming titles to locally hosted servers to improve the gaming experience for South African’s” says Jason Borea, Director at Megarom. Megarom are expecting queues of gaming fans at retailers across the country on launch day.<\/em><\/p>\n

MWEB’s new peering system and Black Ops<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yesterday we reported that MWEB will no longer be peering with ISPs who refuse to drop local network charges. MWEB believes that local ISPs should be able to connect to each other without having to pay a fee. Essentially, MWEB will no longer peer with Telkom, Vodacom and MTN. <\/p>\n

This means that anyone using bandwidth supplied by those ISPs will not be able to connect directly to the MWEB servers. Instead, they will connect via an international pipeline, and in theory, will experience very high latencies. <\/p>\n

MWEB does have peering agreements with other ISP’s, including IS. At this point, only users on the Vodacom, MTN and Telkom networks will experience lag on the MWEB servers.<\/p>\n
