The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) has launched its #Skelm campaign, advising people to \u201cWise Up and Watch Out\u201d to avoid becoming victims of cybercrime.<\/p>\n
In the past few years, cybercrime cases have increased – with\u00a0people being defrauded of billions of rand online.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt affects business sectors and consumers, and this has called on security measures to be put in place to protect assets and important information,\u201d said Kalyani Pillay,\u00a0Sabric CEO.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe responsibility of protecting yourself against cybercrime and increasing your cybersecurity lies with every single one of us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sabric said consumers should ensure their PC and mobile phones are updated with the latest updates and anti-virus software.<\/p>\n
It further advises creating a new password directly after updating software, and the use of a secondary email address for financial matters.<\/p>\n
Sabric also warned that public computers are not safe for banking. \u201cThey are prone to spyware and malware and should be avoided at all costs,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
It is also important to delete sensitive information like bank statements from your inbox, moving them to a secure folder.<\/p>\n
