{"id":166112,"date":"2016-05-24T16:59:05","date_gmt":"2016-05-24T14:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=166112"},"modified":"2016-05-24T17:00:44","modified_gmt":"2016-05-24T15:00:44","slug":"big-twitter-changes-to-how-140-character-message-limit-is-counted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/166112-big-twitter-changes-to-how-140-character-message-limit-is-counted.html","title":{"rendered":"Big Twitter changes to how 140-character message limit is counted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Twitter has announced significant changes to how it will calculate\u00a0the\u00a0length of messages on its platform, which are restricted to 140 characters.<\/p>\n<p>News of the pending changes\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/165250-twitter-to-change-its-140-character-measurement.html\">first emerged in a report on Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the coming months we&#8217;ll make changes to simplify Tweets, including what counts toward your 140 characters,&#8221; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/express-even-more-in-140-characters\" target=\"_blank\">said Twitter<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For instance, @names in replies and media attachments (like photos, GIFs, videos, and polls) will no longer use up valuable characters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Twitter outlined the following changes which will be rolling out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Replies:<\/strong> When replying to a Tweet, @names will not count toward the character limit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Media attachments:<\/strong>\u00a0Photos, GIFs, videos, polls, or Quote Tweets will not count as characters.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Retweet and Quote Tweet yourself:<\/strong>\u00a0The Retweet button will be enabled on your own Tweets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>.@ no longer needed:<\/strong>\u00a0This will simplify the rules around Tweets that start with a username. New Tweets that begin with a username will reach all your followers, which means you will no longer have to use the &#8220;.@&#8221; convention.
