Microsoft is “signalling the end” of its Nokia smartphone mission, writing off\u00a0$950 million and letting\u00a01,850 workers go.<\/p>\n

According to a report by The Verge, Microsoft will retrench\u00a0employees at Microsoft’s Mobile division in Finland, with\u00a0$200 million used as severance payments.<\/p>\n

Microsoft wrote off $7.6 billion and cut 7,800 jobs in 2015, said The Verge, as the company attempted to refocus its smartphone business.<\/p>\n

A small number of employees will remain in research and development roles, stated the report.<\/p>\n

“We are focusing our phone efforts where we have differentiation – with enterprises that value security, manageability, and our Continuum capability, and consumers who value the same,” said\u00a0Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.<\/p>\n

The news follows the announcement that\u00a0Nokia<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will license its brand and intellectual property to HDM global, which will produce a range of Android smartphones and tablets.<\/p>\n
