{"id":166782,"date":"2016-05-31T12:02:08","date_gmt":"2016-05-31T10:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=166782"},"modified":"2016-05-31T12:03:30","modified_gmt":"2016-05-31T10:03:30","slug":"why-dstv-stops-supporting-decoders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/166782-why-dstv-stops-supporting-decoders.html","title":{"rendered":"Why DStv stops supporting decoders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A number of DStv decoders have reached <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/165230-dstv-decoder-models-which-cannot-be-fixed.html\"><strong>end of support<\/strong><\/a>, which means that MultiChoice\u2019s agents can no longer repair them.<\/p>\n<p>Although the majority of older decoders may be refurbished or repaired, MultiChoice said three PVR decoders and six single-view decoder models are currently in end of support.<\/p>\n<p>Group general manager for broadcast technology Nyiko Shiburi told MyBroadband that the main reason they decide to stop supporting decoders is the availability of components.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOld components become more and more expensive as time goes by,\u201d said Shiburi, which means that the cost to repair a decoder will eventually exceed\u00a0the cost to replace it.<\/p>\n<p>Another factor MultiChoice considers is how well a decoder supports new features.<\/p>\n<p>Older decoders can\u2019t handle some of the additional functionality DStv is rolling out, said Shiburi.<\/p>\n<p>PVR decoders which\u00a0are currently in end of support are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SD PVR<\/li>\n<li>Dual View<\/li>\n<li>UEC 4-tuner HD PVR<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Single-view decoders which\u00a0are currently in end of support are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>660<\/li>\n<li>720<\/li>\n<li>720i<\/li>\n<li>910<\/li>\n<li>933<\/li>\n<li>990<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These decoders no longer receive software updates, and customers cannot take out decoder insurance on these models.<\/p>\n<p>For decoders still within their support period, MultiChoice charges repair fees of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>R698 for a PVR model<\/li>\n<li>R350 for a single-view decoder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For customers with decoder insurance, there is no repair fee.
