{"id":166854,"date":"2016-06-01T10:00:57","date_gmt":"2016-06-01T08:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=166854"},"modified":"2016-06-01T10:02:22","modified_gmt":"2016-06-01T08:02:22","slug":"how-to-stop-windows-10-from-installing-automatically","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/166854-how-to-stop-windows-10-from-installing-automatically.html","title":{"rendered":"How to stop Windows 10 from installing automatically"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft recently started <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/166176-microsoft-tricks-users-into-upgrading-to-windows-10.html\"><strong>automatically scheduling upgrades to Windows 10<\/strong><\/a> for some users.<\/p>\n<p>This was after the software giant pushed the update to users on older versions of its operating system as a \u201crecommended update\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/166176-microsoft-tricks-users-into-upgrading-to-windows-10.html\"><strong>Internet Society in China has accused Microsoft<\/strong><\/a> of abusing its dominant market position and breaking &#8220;the market order for fair play\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Reports suggest that some users have even taken the drastic step of disabling critical updates to avoid downloading the Windows 10 upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>This may leave your PC open to attack if you don\u2019t manually install security updates.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not want to install Windows 10,\u00a0you can use one of the workarounds detailed below.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Windows-10-automatically-scheduled-update.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-166856\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Windows-10-automatically-scheduled-update.jpg\" alt=\"Windows 10 automatically scheduled update\" width=\"474\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 id=\"hidetheupgradenotification\">Hide the upgrade notification<\/h3>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t registered for and claimed your Windows 10 upgrade, you can hide the upgrade notification.<\/p>\n<p>The instructions are detailed on\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/3095675\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft\u2019s support site<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Right-click the Taskbar, and then select Properties.<\/li>\n<li>On the Taskbar tab, go down to the Notification area and select Customize.<\/li>\n<li>In the Notification Area Icons window, for the GWX icon, select Hide icon and notifications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Windows-10-disable-GWX-notifications.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-166868\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Windows-10-disable-GWX-notifications.jpg\" alt=\"Windows 10 disable GWX notifications\" width=\"474\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 id=\"unscheduleyourupdate\">Unschedule your update<\/h3>\n<p>The above measures only work if you haven\u2019t registered for and scheduled your update.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/3095675\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft also provides instructions<\/a><\/strong> for how to cancel your upgrade to Windows 10.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the &#8220;Get Windows 10&#8221; It is free, and may be downloaded from the website of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grc.com\/never10.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Gibson Research Corporation<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ultimateoutsider.com\/downloads\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ultimate Outsider website<\/a><\/strong>, and promises to constantly monitor your PC for attempts to upgrade it to Windows
