This incident followed a longer downtime which occurred on Wednesday.

While the downtime on Wednesday was caused by damage to two of the fibre links which connect MWEB to Neotel’s data centre where SEACOM terminates, the latest international connectivity loss remains a mystery.

MWEB ISP CEO Derek Hershaw said yesterday that a problem at the Neotel data centre in Midrand was to blame for the downtime.

“We lost access to our Seacom bandwidth for about 15-20 minutes, just after 12H00. The problem was at the Neotel data centre in Midrand, we’re still waiting for the full Incident Report to confirm exactly what happened,” said Hershaw.

Neotel’s communications department could not be reached for comment before publication of the article, but after publication Neotel was quick to respond, saying that they were not to blame.

“There were no failures today [(18 November 2010)] on this service at the Neotel Internet Data Centre in Midrand, or in the vicinity of the Data Centre,” said Neotel CTO Angus Hay.

“A fibre circuit provided by Dark Fibre Africa to M-Web was damaged this morning [(18 November 2010)] at a point 22 km from the Data Centre. Following the repair of this fibre, we were requested to assist in testing, which we duly did, to enable DFA to restore their service. At no stage were any Neotel services or equipment involved in this fault,” said Hay.

MWEB CEO Rudi Jansen said that they are still investigating the matter.

“We have engaged both Neotel and DFA and await the official incident reports. At the moment we are getting conflicting reports. We will have to dig deeper to get to the bottom of this,” said Jansen.

MWEB ADSL international outage: It wasn’t us, says Neotel << Comments and views

Uncertainty remains on exactly what happened yesterday to cause the loss of international connectivity to MWEB ADSL subscribers

[5

post-16699","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-adsl
