Naspers recently released its annual results for the year ended 31 March 2016, with MultiChoice showing modest growth across Africa thanks to new subscribers taking up cheaper packages.<\/p>\n

Across the continent, its DStv and GOtv subscriber base increased by 2%.<\/p>\n

Although DStv in South Africa and GOtv elsewhere on the continent saw around 6% subscriber growth, DStv numbers in the rest of Africa decreased by 11%.<\/p>\n

Subscriber mix<\/h3>\n

Premium subscribers now account for 20% of the subscriber base, down from 23%. Note that this does not necessarily mean MultiChoice has lost DStv Premium subscribers.<\/p>\n

Compact subscribers make up 30% of the subscriber base, up from 27%. Lower-end subscribers remained at 50%.<\/p>\n

PVR subscribers<\/h3>\n

The number of subscribers paying for a PVR service in South Africa has increased by 11% since March 2015.<\/p>\n

Nasper said in its interim results last year that one of MultiChoice\u2019s aims was to increase its PVR client base<\/strong><\/a>, as they tend to cancel less.<\/p>\n

It is for this reason that MultiChoice opened Catch Up to Compact and Extra subscribers<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs churn is more than 50% lower for PVR customers, growth of this base will have a positive financial impact,\u201d said Naspers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe focus remains on providing the best-quality entertainment while managing costs, improving customer service, driving retention, and growing average revenues per user through value-added services such as BoxOffice.\u201d<\/p>\n
