{"id":171901,"date":"2016-07-18T11:30:19","date_gmt":"2016-07-18T09:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=171901"},"modified":"2016-07-18T11:32:25","modified_gmt":"2016-07-18T09:32:25","slug":"telkom-lte-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/171901-telkom-lte-problems.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom LTE problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom LTE users have complained of high latency during peak times on the operator&#8217;s network over the past several\u00a0weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/797784-Degrading-Telkom-LTE-Uncapped-speeds\/page43\">MyBroadband readers<\/a><\/strong> and members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.telkom.co.za\/t5\/LTE\/Very-high-network-latency-out-of-Durban\/m-p\/5502\/highlight\/false#M737\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Telkom Community page<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0stated that the problems started around the beginning of July.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband also received email complaints from users in Durban and Port Elizabeth.<\/p>\n<p>The latency issues appear to be nationwide, and are most common during peak times on Telkom&#8217;s network &#8211; particularly between 19:00 &#8211; 21:00.<\/p>\n<p>A number of users posted speed test and online gaming statistics which showed their latency increasing from\u00a0below 50ms to over 200ms in the evening.<\/p>\n<p>Several users\u00a0said their latency peaked between 500ms to 1,000ms when the problem was at its worst.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom LTE users have also complained of slow download speeds, with one user&#8217;s speed test showing his usual download rates\u00a0of\u00a090Mbps dropping to around 3Mbps during peak times.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Telkom gives more customers access to LTE<\/h3>\n<p>On 15 June, Telkom revealed it was\u00a0refarming parts of its network to make room for improved LTE access.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, Telkom\u2019s LTE and LTE-Advanced network was deployed in a configuration known as time-division duplex, on unused spectrum in the 2,300MHz band.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom started rolling out its LTE network on its 1,800MHz spectrum, which allowed for more\u00a0devices to connect and provided better in-building penetration.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom&#8217;s users have speculated that the\u00a0move\u00a0has caused congestion on its network, while others state the operator is suffering from a lack of backhaul capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom was asked for comment on the matter, but did not respond.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">More on Telkom<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/fibre\/171621-ftth-price-shoot-out-telkom-vs-mtn-vs-vodacom.html\">FTTH price shoot-out: Telkom vs MTN vs Vodacom<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/171169-r10000-share-shoot-out-vodacom-vs-mtn-vs-telkom.html\">R10,000 share shoot-out: Vodacom vs MTN vs Telkom<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom LTE users have complained of high latency during peak times on the operator&#8217;s network over the past several weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":129916,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[35,2490,109],"class_list":["post-171901","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cellular","tag-headline","tag-lte","tag-telkom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/171901"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=171901"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/171901\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":172161,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/171901\/revisions\/172161"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/129916"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=171901"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=171901"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=171901"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
