MTN and Vodacom have welcomed the “progress made by ICASA” in terms of making frequency spectrum available.<\/p>\n
MTN and Vodacom made the announcement following ICASA’s decision to\u00a0issue an invitation to operators<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to apply for high-demand\u00a0spectrum.<\/p>\n Radio frequency spectrum from the complimentary bands IMT700, IMT800, and IMT2600 form part of the invitation to apply.<\/p>\n “MTN is currently evaluating the ITA as published to understand the requirements for participation as well as the terms and conditions of the auction process,” said MTN.<\/p>\n “Ultimately, the licensing of frequency spectrum will benefit consumers who are demanding better quality and higher speeds as it will allow operators to more rapidly roll out advanced broadband services.”<\/p>\n MTN is currently densifying its network by rolling out more\u00a0base stations and refarming its existing spectrum to support LTE technology,\u00a0it said.<\/p>\n Vodacom said it is\u00a0considering the contents of the\u00a0invitation to apply, and will “make further comments in due course”.<\/p>\n “At first sight, the invitation to apply includes some tough asks such as speeds that need to be attained across SA by 2020,” said Vodacom.<\/p>\n “Having said that, it is clear that the smart intent on this front is to drive continuous investment into infrastructure.”<\/p>\nVodacom\u00a0considering application<\/h3>\n
