{"id":172440,"date":"2016-07-19T13:30:01","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T11:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=172440"},"modified":"2016-07-19T13:31:58","modified_gmt":"2016-07-19T11:31:58","slug":"the-questions-dstv-must-answer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/172440-the-questions-dstv-must-answer.html","title":{"rendered":"The questions DStv must answer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa recently <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/169597-is-dstv-killing-competition-in-south-africa-icasa-will-investigate.html\"><strong>launched its investigation<\/strong><\/a> into South Africa\u2019s subscription television broadcasting market.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation is meant to address concerns raised by stakeholders, and is a way for ICASA to determine why so few subscription TV services have launched in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite multiple attempts to introduce competition in the subscription broadcasting market, only two licensees have been able to launch services,\u201d said ICASA.<\/p>\n<p>It was referring to players like TopTV, which applied for business rescue in 2012, was bought by StarTimes, and renamed to StarSat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two entrants have been plagued with sustainability challenges and the others have not yet begun operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of its investigation, ICASA has asked stakeholders to complete a questionnaire.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Questionnaire<\/h3>\n<p>The questions broadcasters such as DStv operator MultiChoice were asked included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What has the impact of OTT services been on your business?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOTT\u201d stands for \u201cover-the-top\u201d, and refers to services like Netflix, ShowMax, iTunes Movies, and Google Play Movies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What are your views on a la carte vs bouquet model in payTV?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ICASA is asking what stakeholders think of being able to choose their own channels, rather than buying fixed packages of channels.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How have the prices you pay for rights to key content assets changed through time?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MultiChoice said these costs have increased significantly over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The weakness of the rand increased\u00a0costs even further as much of its content is bought in US dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Other questions included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are your processes for acquiring international content?<\/li>\n<li>Do you consider the payTV market to be competitive?
