{"id":172606,"date":"2016-07-21T18:33:09","date_gmt":"2016-07-21T16:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=172606"},"modified":"2016-07-21T18:35:06","modified_gmt":"2016-07-21T16:35:06","slug":"10-settings-in-windows-10-you-should-disable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/172606-10-settings-in-windows-10-you-should-disable.html","title":{"rendered":"10 settings in Windows 10 you should disable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft\u00a0is\u00a0pushing its free upgrade to Windows 10 <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/170763-you-wont-miss-this-windows-10-update-notification.html\"><strong>more aggressively<\/strong><\/a>, which means more people are booting up the new operating system for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a Windows 10 user, you may be aware of <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/134536-how-microsoft-is-making-you-pay-for-the-free-windows-10-upgrade.html\"><strong>the concerns<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0people have raised regarding Windows 10\u2019s default privacy settings.<\/p>\n<p>By default, Windows 10 will send speech, typing, and inking input along with your contacts and calendar details to Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>It will also create an \u201cadvertising ID\u201d for you to allow for better targeted ads from third parties.<\/p>\n<p>Those on capped broadband accounts take note: Windows 10 will use your connection to help distribute updates to other Windows 10 users.<\/p>\n<p>Instructions on how to disable many of these settings are summarised below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">File sharing updates<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u00a0don\u2019t want Microsoft to use your broadband connection to help distribute patches, disable the setting by going to:<\/p>\n<p>Settings &gt; Update &amp; security &gt; Advanced options &gt; Choose how updates are delivered.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Choose-how-updates-are-delivered.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-172624\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Choose-how-updates-are-delivered.jpg\" alt=\"Windows 10 Settings - Choose how updates are delivered\" width=\"630\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Wi-Fi Sense<\/h3>\n<p>Windows 10 will share your Wi-Fi login details with your friends on Outlook.com and Skype.<\/p>\n<p>It will also share your password with your Facebook friends if you give it permission to.<\/p>\n<p>Navigate to Settings &gt; Network and Internet &gt; Wi-Fi, and click on Manage Wi-Fi to disable this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Wi-Fi-Sense.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-new-size wp-image-172622\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Wi-Fi-Sense-640x426.jpg\" alt=\"Windows 10 Settings - Wi-Fi Sense\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Wi-Fi-Sense-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Wi-Fi-Sense-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Wi-Fi-Sense-250x166.jpg 250w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Wi-Fi-Sense.jpg 797w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Annoying notifications<\/h3>\n<p>You can disable annoying notifications on an app-by-app basis in the Action Centre: Settings &gt; System &gt; Notifications &amp; actions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Notification-settings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-172620\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Notification-settings.jpg\" alt=\"Windows 10 Settings - Notification settings\" width=\"596\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Notification-settings.jpg 596w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Notification-settings-463x430.jpg 463w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Start menu ads<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft will suggest apps from the Windows Marketplace in your start menu. Press Enter.<\/li>\n<li>Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows<\/li>\n<li>Right-click in the right pane, hover over New, then select Key.<\/li>\n<li>Rename the folder created to \u201cPersonalization\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the Personalization folder, right-click in the right pane and create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value.<\/li>\n<li>Rename it to \u201cNoLockScreen\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Double click NoLockScreen and under value data change it from 0 to 1, then click OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-run-regedit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-172614\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-run-regedit.jpg\" alt=\"Windows 10 run regedit\" width=\"456\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Settings sync<\/h3>\n<p>Settings such as your themes, passwords, and search history are synced to Microsoft\u2019s servers for use on other Windows 10 devices.<\/p>\n<p>Go to Settings &gt; Accounts &gt; Sync your settings, where you can disable all syncing, or selectively disable sync.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Sync-your-settings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-172612\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-Settings-Sync-your-settings.jpg\" alt=\"Windows 10 Settings - Sync your settings\" width=\"535\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">OneDrive<\/h3>\n<p>Windows 10 will want to synchronise your documents with OneDrive.<\/p>\n<p>There is no way to uninstall OneDrive, but you can sign it out of your Microsoft account, disable synching, and prevent it from starting up with your machine.<\/p>\n<p>These options are available by right-clicking on the OneDrive icon in the system tray.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft also has a guide on its support site for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-US\/article\/Turn-off-or-uninstall-OneDrive-f32a17ce-3336-40fe-9c38-6efb09f944b0\" target=\"_blank\">disabling OneDrive<\/a><\/strong> as much as Windows 10 will allow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-OneDrive-system-tray-icon.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-172608 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Windows-10-OneDrive-system-tray-icon.png\" alt=\"Windows 10 OneDrive system tray icon\" width=\"202\" height=\"48\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Visual effects on the user interface (optional)<\/h3>\n<p>Right-click the Start button and go to System &gt;
