{"id":173390,"date":"2016-07-26T09:25:51","date_gmt":"2016-07-26T07:25:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=173390"},"modified":"2016-07-26T09:27:36","modified_gmt":"2016-07-26T07:27:36","slug":"sms-to-be-banned-as-two-factor-authentication-system-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/173390-sms-to-be-banned-as-two-factor-authentication-system-in-the-us.html","title":{"rendered":"SMS to be banned as two-factor authentication system in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States\u00a0National Institute for Standards and Technology is getting ready to ban SMS as a way to implement two-factor authentication, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/nist-set-to-ban-sms-based-two-factor-authentication\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cnet reported<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, a paragraph in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.nist.gov\/800-63-3\/sp800-63b.html\" target=\"_blank\">new draft of\u00a0the Digital Authentication Guideline<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0reads as follows:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Out of band verification] using SMS is deprecated, and will no longer be allowed in future releases of this guidance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>South African banks and credit card companies like MasterCard and Visa all use SMS as an authentication mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>To work around banks&#8217;
